Object of the Month: Sword of Captain CLC Bowes-Lyon

This month’s Object of the Month is the sword belonging to Captain CLC Bowes-Lyon, the cousin of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. He was killed in October 1914 at the First Battle of the Ypres in Belgium, whilst serving in the 1st Battalion. The Queen Mother was a particularly important figure in the history of The Black Watch and held a special relationship with the Regiment. She served as Colonel in Chief from 1937 – 2002, and lost both her cousin and her brother during the First World War. The sword proved to be of particular interest to HRH Prince Charles during his visit earlier this year. 139
